Stallion · foundation sire
Toby's Samson
Samson is our stallion. He was foaled 11 May 2009, bred by Julia Whalen, and certified by the RMHA on 24 August 2014. The registry lists him at 15.1 hands. Our RMHA stud listing calls him 15.2. Both figures are on this page so a researcher can see the difference.
He is a black-based silver bay. He is tested EE Aa ZZ, homozygous silver. The RMHA stud listing prints Zz. That printing is an error. He stands here in Bushnell for live cover and frozen semen. Our published fee is $850. Mare care is available. We breed him only to non-silver mares that we approve before the breeding, so the foals are silver carriers and not ZZ. Why this breed
The sire line is Broken Bone's Sam's Son, by Sewell's Sam out of Sewell's Beauty. Sewell's Sam was bred by Sam Tuttle and is a son of Tobe, the stallion most modern Rocky Mountain Horses trace to. Sewell's Beauty is also by Tobe. That is the Sewell Sam cross the stud listing names first.
The dam, Choco Dock's Goldie Locs, is by Maple's Squirrel and out of Red Gail. Maple's Squirrel is by Tobe, out of Goodpastures Maude. Red Gail is by Yankee (Ragtime), the other historic Tuttle sire named on the stud page, and out of Gail. Samson concentrates Tobe through Sewell's Sam, Sewell's Beauty, Maple's Squirrel, and Yankee, which is why his own inbreeding coefficient is 12.40%.
ZZ means two copies of silver. He passes silver to every foal. The stud page's Zz would have meant one copy, and about half the foals silver. The test says otherwise. A non-silver mare gives the foal one silver allele from him and none from her, so the foal is Zz, written Z/N on many lab reports. That is why Samsons Legacy and Samsons Silver Mocha are both Z/N. We do not breed him to silver mares, because that mating can make a ZZ foal. ZZ is the genotype tied to the observable form of multiple congenital ocular anomalies. The cysts associated with a single copy are a different picture, and we keep that reading on the research page.
EE means he is homozygous for black at the extension locus, so he does not sire a chestnut. Aa means he carries agouti and can sire either a bay-based or a black-based foal. Read the bloodlines page before you send a mare.

Three generations
Each name opens that horse's RMHA breed record, five generations deep. The registry is the record. This chart is a reading aid.
