Starbucks Latte

Latte is our buckskin mare. She was foaled 18 February 2009, bred by Tammie Hillis, and certified 14 July 2014. The registry lists her at 15.2 hands with an inbreeding coefficient of 3.52%, and lists us as owner. Samson sits at 12.40%, so her low figure is why she is a foundation mare and not just a color. A foal is due in March.

Cream, and what she gives Samson

Her sire, R Ranger Dream Maker, is perlino, which is a double cream dilute. Latte herself is buckskin, so she carries a single cream gene on a bay base. Samson is not a cream carrier. He is tested ZZ, so every foal of his inherits silver. Cream from Latte is still about a one-in-two chance, and the two genes sort separately.

That is already visible in her Samson foals. Samsons Silver Mocha, 2022, is silver bay and tested Z/N: silver from Samson, no cream expressed. Samsons Legacy, 2024, is silver buckskin and Z/N: silver and cream together, on a bay base. Both are what a ZZ stallion and a single-cream buckskin mare are built to produce.

Her sire line also carries Choco Dock Junior and Yankee Graham Cracker, both buckskins, so the cream is not a one-generation accident. Her dam, Myra McGuire, is black, by Maple's Squirrel. Maple's Squirrel is also the sire of Samson's dam. Latte and Samson meet on that horse, which is part of why their foals are recorded at 9.67% inbreeding rather than at Latte's own 3.52%.

Three generations

Each name opens that horse's RMHA breed record, five generations deep. The registry is the record. This chart is a reading aid.
